Not a Post about PowerPoint

I was going to blog about how PowerPoint is evil, but the whole Internet (and my coworkers on this blog) have already beat me to it. I’m sure someone has also already pointed out how fantastic it is for a US Army brigadier general to be quoted in The New York Times saying:

“Some problems in the world are not bullet-izable.”

And I’m constantly singing the praises of Dan Roam’s inventive approaches to more effective presentations. Enough already. So, instead, for those of you who really want to get ahead in business, here’s the latest news on how the Emerald Cockroach Wasp makes cockroaches into obedient mindless zombies:

Like many parasites, the Emerald Cockroach Wasp manipulates its host’s behavior for its own benefit…When the female wasp is ready to lay her eggs, she seeks out a cockroach. Landing on the prospective host, she delivers two precise stings…The wasp takes hold of one of the roach’s antennae and leads it, like a dog on a leash, to its doom: the wasp’s burrow. The roach creeps obediently inside and sits there quietly as the wasp lays her egg on its underside. The wasp leaves the burrow, sealing the opening behind her.

The egg hatches, and the larva chews a hole in the side of the roach. In it goes. The larva grows inside the roach, devouring the organs of its host, for about eight days. It is then ready to form a pupa inside the roach. After four more weeks, the wasp grows to an adult. It breaks out of its pupa, and out of the roach as well. Only then does the zombie cockroach die.

Health Care on the Back of a Napkin

Having trouble understanding the current health care debate? As Portfolio author Dan Roam knows, sometimes the best way to understand a complex problem is with a simple picture. The brains behind the bestselling book The Back of the Napkin and the soon-to-be-released follow-up Unfolding the Napkin is devoting a four-part blog series to explaining health care over at http://digitalroam.typepad.com/. From the first installment:

Healthcare_napkin1-1
This is the overall title page for all four napkins.

Healthcare_napkin1-2
This napkin introduces the business of health care.

Healthcare_napkin1-3
The equation is simple: I get sick, my doctor fixes me, my doctor gets paid.

Healthcare_napkin1-4
Lately though, the “payer” (my insurance provider) has come between me and my doctor, telling both of us which treatments are okay and which are not. In fact, my insurance carrier has become the party that “rations” my health care.
